A Day in the Life of an Aurum Resident

Oh hey!

You must be new here.

I am Richa, I have been living at Aurum for over a month now. And I must say, what a great decision I have made with my children to stay here.

If you’d like, I could give you a tour.

Once you register at Aurum, you would be provided a studio apartment, based on your preference. There are few with the park view, and I personally love that. I do my morning meditation in my balcony facing the park. The lush environment refreshes my mind for a new day. As I am back in my room, I hear a knock at the door beckons me for my morning tea. After the energising cup of tea, I like to read a few pages from a book issued by the Aurum Library. Reading has cognitively enriched me. Sometimes my children video call me before leaving for work and it helps me feel connected to them, thanks to the great wi-fi provision across Aurum’s premises.

Oh! I must introduce you to my General Care Assistant, Ms. Renu. She is always with me, she ensures timely administration of my medications, and she is always available for assistance whenever I require it. She is adorable. Especially during the ongoing-pandemic she helps me to diligently follow the COVID-19 protocols of Aurum. She helps me get ready and dressed before I step out of my room for breakfast.

Breakfast is served starting at 8:00 AM at the Khana-Peena, the resident’s dining hall, downstairs. The meals served are specially curated according to each of our nutritional requirements. The food is as appetizing as it appears, plus the benefits of being healthy. The dining hall is an interactive space sound with laughter and the chitter-chatter of the residents. Sharing our memories with each other and making new friends. This is where we have some of the most memorable times. Thereafter, we return to our apartments; making sure social distancing is followed all along.

At 10:00 AM, the nurse takes our daily vitals. She maintains a record of all our measures and shares it with the team of physicians at Aurum.

Now, we engage in physical exercises at 11:00AM in the Akhara, the gymnasium. Today we will be performing some light aerobics. These exercises help in improving agility, stability and balance when walking and other daily activities. Did you know that regular exercise has been associated with a decreased risk of developing dementia? Additionally, it improves mental health and sleep habits. Our physical instructor has a knack for keeping the sessions fun and engaging!

12:00 PM is when we have a number of fun activities. It is managed by the Happiness team at Aurum. They plan different sessions each day. Today we will be doing a painting, and a karaoke session. We go to town with these sessions! When we reach the Masti ki Pathshala, I can show you my paintings that I have painted.

At 1:00 PM, you will begin to smell the aroma of the food in the air. If at any point you are unsure of what’s on the menu, the day’s menu card is always posted right next to the counter.

After lunch it’s time for us to relax, some of us like to take a power nap during the afternoon. Often our family physician visits for a round, and inspects each resident, to determine their well-being. During this time, we can talk about any health issues or concerns. The physician takes a note and reviews it with the group of physicians. Then a comprehensive plan is developed to effectively cope and manage the matter. The medical report is constantly updated with the residents’ kin. The family can always rely on the Aurum team, that even though they are not available right now, they are comforted that the Aurum team of professionals are providing a well-curated plan and care for their member.

Today at 4:00PM, a seminar will be hosted by the Happiness team. It’s on ‘Gratitude.’ Usually, one of the members talks about the topic and performs fun activities. Often, we also get an opportunity to talk from our experiences. It is a great opportunity to introduce yourself, know others, and hear great inspiring stories. I have witnessed that these sessions are very relaxing and create a stress-free environment. Customarily, 4:00 PM is the Club time, where you meet up with other residents with similar interests, have great discussions, and host events to share with other residents.

Once a week we are visited by the physiotherapist who assesses our joints, movements, gait, and flexibility. Based on which he prescribes a few exercises which we can practise during the week.

After a great interaction at the club house, we gather for evening tea and snacks, and then some return to their rooms, while others take a short stroll in the park. When we are back in our rooms, our nurses come to record our vitals for the evening. The nurses are very gentle and polite when dealing with us.

At 7:00 PM we meet for dinner, the staff ensures and are responsible for our optimal diet and even hydration. The diet has definitely helped me regain strength to perform tasks and have sustained energy for the day.

At about 8:00 PM, I am ready to have a goodnight’s rest. And, Renu again helps me get cleaned and dressed for bed, assists me with my medications. I listen to music while journaling before falling asleep. As I feel sleepy, Renu tucks me in, we wish each other good night, and the day comes to an end as the lights are dimmed.

Coming here has reduced the weight on my shoulders. Now Aurum has become a  functional unit that lifts me little by little out of my inabilities physically, emotionally, and socially. The staff takes care of me physically, emotionally, and socially. Now this is what I would call ‘Retiring in style!’
